Τα βασανιστήρια, ως τακτική ανακρίσεως, έχει αποδειχθεί ότι είναι μια πλήρης και απόλυτη αποτυχία. Μπορεί να φαίνεται διαισθητικά ότι η εφαρμογή ακραίου πόνου, μαρτυρίων και άγχους σε αιχμαλώτους πριν και κατά την διάρκεια της ανάκρισής τους, θα μπορούσε να ενισχύσει την προθυμία τους να αποκαλύψουν πληροφορίες. Αλλά όταν εξετάζεται η πλήρης γκάμα των αποτελεσμάτων των βασανιστηρίων, είναι σαφές ότι η πρακτική αυτή δεν είναι καθόλου συνετή, σοφή ή λογική.
Ο SHANE O’MARA είναι καθηγητής Πειραματικής Έρευνας για τον Εγκέφαλο και βασικός ερευνητής στο Wellcome Trust στο Ινστιτούτο Νευροεπιστημών Δουβλίνου, στο Trinity College.
